Bwhat?!

Bwhat?! is the name of an arts festival on the theme of the BOX that took place in June 2011 in Aurillac (Cantal, FRANCE). It was initiated by the section européenne of the Lycée Saint-Eugène (Ensemble Scolaire Gerbert), in partnership with the Lycée de la Communication Saint-Géraud, the La Manufacture dance school, and the Société La Haute-Auvergne. The hundreds of "sources of inspiration" below are for all you budding artists to use! Feel free to contribute comments. ENJOY!

Bwhat?! FESTIVAL programme

Lycée de la Communication Saint-Géraud
We have created three weird and wonderful short films inspired by the box theme and created a number of works of art too; you will be able to see our masterpieces at the exhibition space (12 rue de Vermenouze) during the festival!

La Manufacture dance school
The dancers have created The BOX, a choreography about being "boxed-in" by one's body (with its limits, its inabilities and disabilities), about not being "connected" with one's body (not understanding or feeling or respecting it); the 30-odd dancers, young and not so young, will be dancing The BOX on the 15th June at 17:30 at the Square in Aurillac.

Section Européenne, Lycée Saint-Eugène
We have written short comments on several of the sources of inspiration on this blog. The idea is to explore the cultural aspects related to a particular type of box, and to inspire creative activity... We will be showing the blog during the festival and people will be able to add their comments.

We have created works of art inspired by the theme: an illustrated kids' story, a project called "mailstones", a "home/box", a "our world" slideshow in an old TV set, a piece of music in the shape of a box, a computer-generated picture inspired by the Trojan horse, and three "hands-on" mystery boxes... You will be able to see our pieces at the exhibition space, 12 rue de Vermenouze.

We have filmed monologues by several of the artists who have contributed boxes in which they explain their work; these will be shown during the festival at the exhibition space.

We have created a choreography, inspired by Playtime, Jacques Tati's 1967 film, called Tatitown, about conformism; we will be dancing Tatitown on the 15th June at 17:00 at the Square in Aurillac.

Collège Saint-Eugène Maths workshop
We will be running a number of fun workshops at the exhibition space during the festival on the geometry of the cube and of the hypercube (?!), plus an international Rubik's Cube competition!

Teufonia choir (Ensemble Scolaire Gerbert)
We have recorded a 2 minute piece which will be used for the Tatitown dance.

Ecole Saint-Eugène
A class has created mini-boxes that talk about... us!

Lycée Saint-Eugène
A modern Pandora's box (do not open!); a three-dimensional travel diary.
