http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdUbiw7JCqY&feature=related

A man is curled over, in a corner, stuck in this metal place. Imprisoned, he is thinking, asking questions. Perhaps he is trapped? He is very well dressed and clean. There is only one, small, light. What is he doing there, what's his story?

This man in fact is a journalist. His "Man in Box" stunt is, I think, a cynical way of making himself known. It's a bit ridiculous in fact. It's typical, voyeuristic, reality TV! What's the point?!

Source of inspiration 211 (click on this title!) : He's in the box!

Why is this girl looking inside this box ? Because there is a boy hiding in there…

Martian child is a movie by Menno Meyjes. It’s the comic story of a science fiction writer, David Gordon, who wants to adopt Dennis, an orphan who thinks that he comes from Mars…

I recommend this movie about this strange little boy who learns to "come out of his box" thanks to David. I really like this film because it says that love can overcome all differences.

A metal frame and plexiglass box, five acrobatic dancers, and a lot of energy and imagination... makes for a magical and mysterious show! These photographs of the show "Les Incubés" by the Rêve2 company were taken during the 2010 Aurillac International Street Theatre Festival.

IDEA! How about writing a short play for four circus characters (girl trapeze artist, strong man, juggler, acrobat)? The box would be a symbol of each character's mental space (they imagine and act within it, and eventually share it)... The box is by turns a creative or a confined space.

And here it is! An idea for a little play for a troupe of artists, by VALENTIN GIRARD who is a 16 year old pupil at Saint-Eugène in Aurillac.

Characters: girl trapeze artist, a strong man, a juggler, and a girl acrobat.

The strong man and the trapeze artist are in love with each other. The strong man is very strong but he is romantic and a sensitive man. The trapeze artist looks very kind and harmless but in reality she's a bit crazy and hyperactive. The juggler looks very happy but in fact he's sad and shy. The acrobat is friendly but she tends to criticize everybody. She's also in love with the strong man and will play a double game trying to convince the strong man that the trapeze artist is playing with his feelings...

The Plexiglas box is in the centre. All the play will be based around this box. The characters can play within and outside the box, or below and above it. But, when the characters enter the box, they reveal their true natures. The box is a way for the characters to express themselves or to be introspective, to express what they feel, who they truly are. When the different characters exit the box, they can keep their real characters or become again what they appear to be…The characters can be in the box alone or with another character.

The means of expression are dance, song, dialogue, and circus.

This is a photo of the big bizarre box that landed in Aurillac in August 2010 during the International Street Theatre Festival... Mysterious sounds and lights come from within. What is this alien thing? Is it dangerous or just amusing? What is it doing here? Is it a spacecraft? Why did it land here? What do the aliens want from us?! The cube is not a reassuring shape...

In French, “punk” is “voyou”. This British music style was created in 1970, replacing the sounds associated with the Hippy movement. It was all about rebelling against the system. It was violent, nihilistic, loud, anarchic.
Initial bands were: The Sonic, The Seeds and 13th Floor Elevators. They inspired The Who and The Kinks.
The peak period of punk was between 1976 and 1980 with The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Ramones.
Punk became internationally popular.
Mixed with Reggae or Ska, it has had a lasting influence in France, the USA, and indeed the United Kingdom (click on the link above to listen to brilliant bands influenced by Punk!).
Green Day, Blink 182 and Sum 41 are bands of today that are heavily influenced by Punk.
So, tint your hair red or blue and start pogo dancing !

Vichy sweet boxes contain the famous "pastilles de Vichy". These pastils are made from sugar and from mineral salts found in the water of Vichy (a town in the Auvergne region of France). They were created in 1825.

I think these boxes are very beautiful. I think it is very interesting to imagine history through objects of the past.

A submarine is a boat which can move in three dimensions. It can be used as a warship or for oceanography … The first miliary submarine was created in 1776: the Turtle (see photo above).

I think a submarine is a real prison because when you are 300 metres under the sea, you can’t get out of course. But, being in a boat under the surface of the ocean must be exciting.

Source of inspiration 190 (click on this title!): Horse box

What does the horse want? Room and light, good ventilation, and to feel safe.

Room and light: An average sized horse needs about 10 feet of usable length to be comfortable. A larger horse needs more, obviously. He needs to be able to spread his legs for steadiness, but it is also important that he be able to move his head and neck freely for balance. A light colored interior and lots of windows or slats will make the trailer much more inviting and less claustrophobic.

Good ventilation: This is important for the horse's respiratory health and to control the temperature and environment of the trailer. Hay dust and noxious gasses from manure and urine compromises the horse's respiratory system and predisposes him to diseases such a shipping fever. Roof vents will remove contaminated and/or hot air from the trailer. A light colored exterior, especially the roof, will make the trailer cooler in hot weather.

Safety in design: There should be nothing sticking out to harm the horse in anyway. Tie rings, and latches should fold flat against the wall. All center posts and dividers should quick release, but should be strong enough to not break apart until you can make the decision. There should not be any sharp edges anywhere. All parts of the trailer should be strong enough to hold up to the largest, strongest horse who will be hauled in it.

Ramps should be low to the ground and not slippery. It should be possible to reach every horse individually in the event of an emergency. Butt and chest bars should quick release.

Source of inspiration 184 (click on this title!): Pizza boxes

How pizzart…

A pizza box is a closed cardboard container used to transport pizza; it keeps the pizza warm for a little while...

Bread dough spread into a circle, covered with tomato puree and various ingredients like cheese, vegetables, meats, and then baked in an oven (preferably a wood stove)... that’s pizza! It was probably originally from Naples, and is now a popular dish throughout the world. One of life's small pleasures is when you pull open that warm box and the steamy aroma of your favourite pizza invades the room... Yum!

Artists have had the idea of transforming mundane and ubiquitous pizza boxes into works of art. This is a clever way for them to become better know ("buy a pizza, admire the art work") and to liven up something that is purely utilitarian.

Artists have also thought of democratizing art by using decorated pizza boxes as containers for works of art they want to sell; art becomes as cheap, cheerful and "tasty" as a pizza, so to speak.

Artists, craftsmen and other clever people do not just recycle or find new uses for pizza boxes, they have thought of ways of making other types of boxes ever more fun and fanciful (see the link above).

IDEA: A “most original pizza box decoration” contest! The winner wins ten pizzas!

Source of inspiration 177 (click on this title!): Barrel organ

A barrel organ is a mechanical musical instrument consisting of bellows and pipes, and it's usually highly decorated.

On the link (see above) we can hear a barel organ played very quickly. The composer is Conlon Nancarrow. It's contemporary music. Conlon Nancarrow was an American composer who became a Mexican citizen. He is best remembered for the pieces he wrote for the player piano. I think he made crazy music but it's always interesting to discover new music...

I like the photo above. We can imagine what music the man played and the atmosphere in the street and, if there were people around him, what their reactions were. We can also imagine the many colours on his barrel organ. The barrel organ is a popular instrument, mostly heard in the streets. But, as Nancarrow proved, it can also be considered as a serious instrument.
