Bwhat?! is the name of an arts festival on the theme of the BOX that took place in June 2011 in Aurillac (Cantal, FRANCE). It was initiated by the section européenne of the Lycée Saint-Eugène (Ensemble Scolaire Gerbert), in partnership with the Lycée de la Communication Saint-Géraud, the La Manufacture dance school, and the Société La Haute-Auvergne. The hundreds of "sources of inspiration" below are for all you budding artists to use! Feel free to contribute comments. ENJOY!

Source of inspiration 32 (click on this title!): Beach cabins
These beach huts are used by holiday makers as places to change, shelter, rest, or eat in. They have the same design, but each has a name and its own colour.
I like them because they are colourful and remind me of the care-free days of summer. Rather than symbolizing conformity, they are more boxes in which people can feel safe, dream and unclutter their minds of their daily problems.

The first jukebox was built in 1889 but the word "jukebox" was only used from the late 1930s on. The word comes from "jook joint", Black English slang "joog" meaning "wicked, disorderly".
It’s a device which can play music records automatically. It changed the music world because people could listen to music without having to buy the disc; it enabled the poor to listen to music too.
Jukeboxes can be very ornate and have become collectors' items.
Source of inspiration 20 (click on this title!): Gift box
The first picture shows two adorable children playing in a cardboard box. They seem happy and to be having fun. Maybe the box contained a gift for them?
A gift is a present that you offer in order to make your friends happy. But, often, when you offer a present to a child, although it is probably very nice, the child is more interested in the box than the toy!
Why do children sometimes prefer to play with the cardboard box rather than the gift itself?
A child can play with a toy but after a time he gets bored with it. But, with a bit of imagination and a simple box, a child can became what he wants to be. The box can become a plane and the child the pilot of this wonderful imaginary machine . A box can also become a super fast train, or a very good hiding place. With a banale box and a creative spirit, children can realize their most wonderful dreams!

Source of inspiration 19 (click on this title!): Jack-in-the-Box
This toy is a Jack-in-the-Box. No one knows who made the first Jack-in-the-Box, but historiens think that they have existed since the Middle-Ages. One of the first known was a present by a German clock maker to the son of a local Prince. This kind of toy became more and more popular from the 17th century on.
I think the fascinating thing about the Jack-in-the-Box is that you are always surprised each time you open it!
One time, I saw, in a kindergarten, a little girl ask: "Why he is always there? Why is he always popping out? Why does he not stay in his house!?" She was not happy with the explanation given by the kindergarten teacher. The whole day she opened the box and she was always very surprised that Jack kept saying "hello!" to her again and again...
She played with a really beautiful Jack-in-the-Box, but there are also very ugly Jacks who look like devils, nasty clowns or who have twisted faces. I do not know if these ugly versions are the best for children. They make them scared.
When I was a little girl I did not like to play with a Jack-in-the-Box. I was always so frightened, even if I opened it for the 100th time... I also did not want to close the box, because I thought that Jack might be scared in the darkness in his small box.

Source of inspiration 16 (click on this title!): Pandora's box
Pandora was, according to Greek mythology, the first woman. She was told not to open a certain box. Pandora, being very curiose, opened the box and let out all the evils. The only thing remaining in the box was "hope" (or a better translation might be "anticipation").
In the photo, "Hope" is a bright light; we should follow this light and always keep hope...

Source of inspiration 10 (click on this title!)
This “box” is a bedroom. It has an unusual atmosphere. The light is green and the bed is too big. Maybe it is the room in a spooky film? I imagine spirits dancing around the bed and in a corner an ugly woman with red hair and black teeth…
In real life, a bedroom is a personal space where you can do whatever you want: relax, invite friends to have fun, etc. A bedroom is also a kind of refuge, where you feel safe. The way your room is arranged, furnished and decorated, is an expression of your personality.
